After 40 years defending individuals charged in many of the country’s most serious crime cases Steve has decided to move away from publicly funded work defence work. Admitted in 1983 Steve went on to lead the crime department at a regional heavyweight firm before establishing along with 2 colleagues, a boutique law firm in 2000 specialising in defending suspects and organisations suspected of involvement in criminal, ‘white collar’, road traffic and regulatory offences. The firm grew into one of the country’s biggest providers of legally aided work operating out of 12 offices nationally. At the same time Steve continued to develop his own practice defending in some of the country’s most serious cases as well as becoming the ‘go to’ practitioner for professionals charged with regulatory and road traffic cases. Some of Steve’s career highlights include:
- Successfully defending one of the men charged with conspiracy to murder in the infamous ‘Trusthorpe’ murder trial where 2 innocent people were gunned down whilst taking part in a witness protection programme
- Defending a child charged with arson and matricide in the killing dubbed by the national press as the ‘Coronation Street copy-cat murderer’
- Leading a team who successfully persuaded the CCRC, after arguably the longest and costliest investigation in the Commission’s history, to reopen the homicide convictions recorded against a man once dubbed the country’s biggest mass killer at the time of his arrest. This led to, 40 years after the defendant’s arrest , in one of the longest ever re-trials to take place before the Court of Appeal in 2022
In addition, Steve has led teams successfully representing celebrities from the world of showbusiness, television and professional sports in trials before both the Crown and Magistrates’ Courts.
